Exciting New Treatment Offers Less Pain and Faster Recovery

For people experiencing chronic pain, life can seem like a progression of bad days and worse days.  The struggle to accomplish even basic life tasks can sometimes be daunting.  Treatments readily available often come with equally-limiting side effects and consequences.  However, for chronic pain sufferers on the MS Gulf Coast, there is another pain management option that is non-invasive and proven successful.  We at Spring of Youth Medical Group are proud to offer Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Treatment (EPAT®), an FDA –approved pain management therapy.

What is EPAT®?

EPAT® is a highly effective treatment option that utilizes a series of specific pressure waves to stimulate the affected tissues, enhance blood circulation, and lessen recovery times by essentially accelerating the natural healing process.  This treatment has been shown, particularly in Germany and Switzerland to improve the local metabolism and healing by mechanico-chemical transduction, improving blood flow and nutrients to the site of pain and pathology by emitting pressure waves through the skin.  EPAT® works equally well for people experiencing skeletal or muscular pain.  Whether the chronic pain condition results from injury, trauma, or disease; EPAT® treatments can stop the cycle of chronic pain symptoms by also addressing the trigger points and resetting the thresholds.  The pressure waves used in EPAT® treatments are safe and non-invasive. In 1980, Storz of Switzerland marketed the lithotripsy machine that revolutionized renal stone management. The machine emitted focused pressure waves, through the skin, onto a kidney stone, fragmenting it. The stone then gets washed out in the urine.  So, for the first time in history renal stone fragments were removed from kidneys without actual surgery!

Further studying the technology and the characteristics of the waves and the responses of the various soft tissues to the different wave frequencies and energy settings indicated intriguing results. EPAT® pressure waves were found to have profound effects on soft and skeletal tissues alike. They were found to have actions similar to acupuncture, in alleviating pain and promoting healing. Specifically, EPAT works at the cellular level causing tiny amounts of stress in the cells treated to make them emit signals that attract circulating stem cells and waken the dormant local population of stem cells. The waves effect angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels) as well as increase perfusion in existing vessels. They cause mechanico-chemical transduction, causing cells to release chemicals that initiate and promote healing; and address trigger points of pain, resetting thresholds, again promoting healing.  The waves gently massage the tissues at the site of chronic pain, easing symptoms almost immediately.

Inflammatory conditions like plantar fasciitis respond extremely well, putting an end to years of suffering and obviating the need for steroid injections and surgery. Back pain of the entire spine, especially that emanating from facet inflammation and ligamentous strain have responded positively to this treatment as having muscle and tendinous injuries.

In addition to treating fasciitis, musculoskeletal injuries, chronic pain and trigger points, EPAT was also found effective in treating bad scars, cellulite and erectile dysfunction (ED), utilizing the same principles expounded above.

The procedure itself takes only 5-10 minutes to perform. Most benefit accrues from completing a series of four to six sessions, performed three to seven days apart, extending over a few weeks. That way, the healing process can progress in an incremental fashion, building on itself, and chronic conditions have a better chance at completion of healing.   This treatment can be used as a standalone or in conjunction with physical therapy, or even stem cell therapy. When performed by a trained practitioner, there are very few risks or side effects reported, and over 80% of patients treated report significant pain reduction or complete remission of the chronic pain.

Spring in for Pain Management
