Juvederm™ Voluma™ –Restore your Youthful Cheeks

Juvederm Voluma is the latest injectable dermal filler from Allergan, makers of Botox®. Voluma extends the successful Juvederm product line to specifically target the entire cheek area, from apex to apple to hollow. Used alone or in combination with other fillers, Juvederm Voluma offers a non-surgical route to reclaiming youthful facialcontours.

How Does Juvederm Voluma Work?

Like Juvederm and Juvederm Plus, Juvederm Voluma is mainly composed of hyaluronic acid, a complex polysaccharide found naturally within the body and partly responsible for structuring the contours of the face. However, whereas the earlier products are ideal for sagging, wrinkles and folds around the mouth, nose and jaw-line, Voluma is a thicker, gel-like preparation designed to be injected deeper under the skin where it can support the tissues where it matters to lift the entire mid-face and cheek area. Applying Voluma is a quick process with instant results and there is some evidence that repeated dermal filler injection can stimulate natural collagen production as well.

Voluma’s unique facelift properties are due to the Vycross cross-link process which alters the structure of the natural polysaccharide chains. This also contributes to the stability of the gel which can maintain its effects for up to two years under standard conditions.

Subtle Facial Sculpting for All Ages

Juvederm Voluma is FDA-approved for adults over 21 years of age and there is evidence that its effects are most aesthetically pleasing and require less filler the younger you are. Although Voluma can dramatically improve the facialcontours of older people, more filler may be required for the similar effects. Therefore, it is often most economical to have treatment sooner rather than later once the early signs of loss of cheek volume are apparent.

Apart from the natural aging process (caused by the effects of volume loss, loss of skin elasticity and the ravages of gravity), there are several other factors which contribute to a reduction of volume in the cheek area. These include weight loss, particularly if rapid or significant, smoking, excessive sun exposure, medical issues (leading to facial asymmetry or droop) and the effects of certain medications. Volume loss includes all tissue types: bone, muscle, fat connective tissue and skin thinning.

For subtle sculpting around the nose and mouth area, Voluma is not recommended. However, Voluma can be safely combined with more suitable fillers for this area such as Juvederm and Juvederm Plus. In fact, combining fillers in this manner is often the preferred approach to achieving the best natural, desirable results.

Preparatory Considerations

It is important to book a professional consultation for eligibility and evaluation to be assessed prior to any filler procedure, owing to a number of factors that can affect the cosmetic outcome. One key factor is the experience and skill of the specialist performing the procedure. Re-contouring the so-called ‘triangle of beauty’ or ‘heart of face’ with its high cheekbones and thin, defined jawline requires both technical expertise and cosmetic appreciation. During a consultation you will have plenty of opportunity to ask questions and assess the specialist’s qualifications and other credentials before going ahead.

A consultation also enables the specialist to ask important questions about your lifestyle and desired results to maximize the chances of optimal correction. No two procedures are exactly alike because no two people are identical. Variation in age, gender, weight and skin chemistry will all have an effect on the techniques used and the ultimate outcome.

The procedure itself can be mildly uncomfortable (like any injection with a tiny needle) and mayoccasionally result in some minor bruising afterwards- which normally disappears within a few days, leaving the desirable result. Patients may take over the counter analgesics like acetaminophen (Tylenol) to relieve any post-procedural pain.
