Vein treatments are quick and relatively painless, according to vein specialist Dr. Hazem Barmada of the Spring of Youth Medical Group in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Most treatments to get rid of varicose veins, spider veins, and other procedures take under 1 hour and are performed with local anesthesia. You may be offered a mild sedative to take before the procedure. If you choose to take it, you will be asked to bring a companion who can drive you to and from the center, as your driving ability may be impaired for a little while after the procedure. However if you prefer, you can forego the analgesics and sedative.
After the vein disease treatment, clinic staff will apply stockings or dressings to the legs. You will be asked to walk, at a comfortable pace, in our lovely courtyard or on a treadmill. Your companion can be present during your walk and this gentle exercise will stimulate blood flow in your legs. You will be able to return to your usual daily activities, including work, the same day; however many patients choose to take the rest of the day off.
After large vein procedures such as EVLT Treatment, or micro-phlebectomy, compression stockings must be worn every day for 1-2 weeks, depending on the advice of your varicose vein doctor and the results of your follow-up examination. The stockings should be worn from rising in the morning until retiring at night. If you have smaller veins such as spider veins removed, your spider vein specialist will decide if you need to wear compression stockings or not.
There is one complication that should be avoided after vein treatment:. deep vein thrombosis (DVT). DVT is a blood clot that develops in a vein, usually in the deep larger veins of the thigh and lower leg. This complication can be avoided with gentle, daily exercise, up to 3 times a day, after your treatment. However, heavy exercise such as running, swimming, or cycling should be avoided for two weeks following your treatment.
Will it hurt afterwards?
Most of our patients at the Spring Youth Medical Group in Ocean Springs, MS, report little to no pain after any of the clinic’s procedures. However, if you do experience discomfort, it can be treated with mild, over-the-counter analgesics such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin). A few patients may experience pain due to trapped blood (in huge veins), and our vein specialist is available at any time to remove the blood using local anesthesia.
Ten days to 2 weeks after the procedure, you’ll return for a follow-up appointment. An ultrasound examination will be performed to ensure that no further vein treatments are needed. If everything is satisfactory, you will not need to wear the compression stockings any longer and you can return to full, normal activity. If, however, Dr. Hazem Barmada believes more treatments are necessary, they will be scheduled at your convenience. Our goals are to eliminate both the symptoms and the underlying causes of vein disease, and to ensure you receive the best aesthetic and medical results possible.
