Gulfport is located in Harrison County, Mississippi, and shares the county seat position with Biloxi. It is the second-largest city in Mississippi and is flanked by 6.7 miles of man-made beaches that stretch along the Gulf of Mexico. Gulfport endured major destruction from Hurricanes Camille and Katrina, but has since rebounded into a popular residential beach community.
History of the City
Gulfport was founded in 1887 by Captain William H. Hardy and later incorporated in 1898. Gulfport’s harbor was finished in 1902 and the Port of Gulfport was established, marking the area with a busy, working seaport.
The current population in Gulfport is 71,318 and the median age is 34. There are 28,377 households in the city with 17,983 being family households. There are 2.5 members per household.
