There is a dizzying amount of information about cosmetic fillers out there. As a safer, more cost-effective alternative to plastic surgery procedures, these cosmetic “touch-ups” allow patients to look and feel their best with less commitment and down time. All you need to do is switch on your television to see lots of examples of happy customers touting the benefits of a variety of products (in between horse-riding and walking on a sunset-lit beach). But over time these ads can seem like one long diatribe with little to differentiate one product from another. However, identical ads do not mean identical products. The purpose of this blog is to identify the key differences between two of the most popular and widely-used cosmetic treatments, Botox® and Juvéderm®, as well to outline a great loyalty program to make these products and services even more affordable.
Botox® – the most commonly performed cosmetic procedure worldwide
Botox® is a type of injection that is mostly used in the treatment of active wrinkles and lines around the eyes and forehead (referred to as upper third of the face), which are caused by contractions of the muscles of facial expression. Owing to its ability to prevent the formation of active wrinkling, Botox® is gaining popularity with the younger segment of the population. It is not uncommon for patients in their early 30’s or even late 20’s to attenuate burgeoning brow creases and crow’s feet in their early stages. Unlike Juvederm®, which is derived from a naturally occurring protein, Botox® is a toxin produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria, in its extremely diluted form. The degree of softening of the muscle contraction and the duration of effect is dose-dependent. However, the effective period runs a little over three months. While “weakening” or temporarily “paralyzing” the muscles of the face may sound scary in print, this treatment has been established as safe in regenerative and cosmetic medicine for over 35 years.
When injected into small muscles, Botox® causes them to relax and not contract forcefully squeezing the soft tissues in between. It was initially used to treat squint, but spillage into the outer muscle was found to diminishes the “squint lines” and wrinkles, which gave a more-youthful appearance. We now use Botox® to treat glabellar lines- the “11-shaped” lines running vertically between the eyebrows. We also treat platysma bands in the neck as well as excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) in the armpits, hands, and feet. These treatments work extremely well and have withstood the test of time for decades. Botox® is considered the industry’s standard for active wrinkles, and could be considered the most effective cosmetic injectable and most widely used around the world. The treatment only takes a few minutes, and typically, as mentioned above, lasts between three and four months, depending on individual patient dynamics and dose. This is considered by many practitioners a “low cost/high reward” option for their patients.
Juvéderm® – effective in softening facial contours
Wrinkles may be caused by active, muscle contractions, wrinkles the skin in between, or passive, caused by volume loss by aging and weight loss. Fillers are more effective for the latter type of wrinkles. Juvéderm® is a popular, cosmetic filler, which is mainly utilized for lines around the mouth. The nasolabial folds- the prominent creases that extend from the nose to the corners of the mouth, which often get deeper with age, are commonly injected with this soft filler. Juvederm® has been proven effective in softening the contours of this facial feature, and many customers report looking and feeling younger following this procedure. Juvederm® is safe; its active ingredient is a protein which is naturally-occurring in the human body known as hyaluronic acid. This protein is normally found as part of the connective tissue, which means it is flexible, natural, and long-lasting. The benefit of hyaluronic acid as a filler is that it looks natural and not overly “stiff” (so it does not giveaway that someone has “had a little work done”). Juvederm® is of a thinner, smoother consistency than some other fillers, so there is less bruising and swelling as a result of the injection. Another pro for Juvederm® is that if (by any stretch of imagination) you’re unhappy with the results, it can be dissolved or reduced easily with an injectable enzyme- hyaluronidase. Treatments usually last around 12 months before reapplication for optimal results may be advisable. Juvederm® is best used for fine lines and light contouring, but for deeper lines, another cosmetic filler like Juvéderm Plus, may be considered. For structural filling, especially in the middle third of the face, the firmer Voluma®, which lasts up to two years, should be considered.
